Tap Taps are the transportation of most of the people in Haiti. Someone asked the question, "Where did they get the name tap tap. It was derived after people saw the early models, which were diesel, sitting and idling. The sound the engine made was tap tap and that is why they are called that to this day. They are brightly painted and often times have religious paintings and sayings on them. The ride varies in price from 5 gourdes to 10 gourdes, considerably more for trips out of town. Later I will explain the "Gourde" and why it is called that. A U.S. dollar is worth approximately 33 to 40 gourdes.
